The head of a Messianic Jewish ministry doesn’t think Christians who support the state of Israel should stop doing so just because the Israeli government pays for abortions.
The Israeli government announced this week that beginning this year it will pay for all approved abortions for women between the ages of 20 and 33, thanks to a recommendation accepted by its health ministry (related article). The government is expected to shell out $4.6 million to cover elective abortions for approximately 6,300 women.
Jan Markell, founder and director of Minnesota-based Olive Tree Ministries, says Israel’s pro-abortion policy doesn’t change what the Bible says about God’s chosen people and their covenant land.
“While I’m acknowledging this is extremely disappointing, am I going to withdraw my support from God’s covenant land? No, because scripture is clear throughout the Bible that Christians really are called to stand with God’s people,” she says.
“While this is disappointing, this does not negate any kind of support for Israel on my part or anybody else who is pro-Israel.”
Markell isn’t alone in her disappointment among Israel supporters. Congressman Trent Franks (R-Arizona) told BuzzFeed that it “breaks my heart that a country that I love as much as I do would take such a position.” Franks, one of the most outspoken pro-life politicians in Congress, chairs the Israel Allies Caucus in the U.S. House.
The Family Research Council has also weighed in, calling it “an egregious offense against the sanctity of life” for any country to provide abortions free-of-charge. FRC assists in arranging trips to Israel for conservative members of Congress.
Markell says it is unfortunate that a people who suffered from the Holocaust would subsidize the slaughter of innocent babies today. “They’re quickly forgetting the Holocaust; it’s becoming ancient history,” she laments. “But I think that if any nation should be aware of the slaughter of the innocent, it should be Israel.”
The ministry leader says until Jesus returns to rule and reign in Jerusalem, today’s politicians in the Holy City are going to continue to make bad decisions like all humans do.
